Secondary Uses for Timber
Did you know there are many great secondary uses for timber?
One thing we find a lot of customers hesitant about is what they will use their timber for that will make harvesting worthwhile. While many people harvest timber to clear land or for firewood, there are many other additional uses for it.
For some, these uses can help them make the decision to harvest timber, as they know they will not be left with a surplus of it sitting in their yard and rotting away.
Here are some secondary uses for timber that you may want to try out the next time you harvest!
Wood chips
The first of our few great secondary uses for harvested wood is wood chips! Toss your leftover hardwoods such as maple, oak, and ash in your wood chipper and you’re left with a great way to smoke meat and give it a great flavor.
Be sure to stray from softwoods, as they can leave harmful toxins on your food! You can also use wood chips as a form of a natural mulch for gardening. So, even if you don’t grill as much as you had hoped to, there’s no way these wood chips will go to waste!
Try your hand at building
While you’re cooped up all winter long, hobbes are essential to keeping us feeling productive! Building is one of the best secondary uses for timber. Consider using your harvested timber to build something in your home.
Whether you start with a small birdhouse (use your skills from woodshop class), a table, or even a nice rocking chair, this use of timber gives you a great hobby to invest your time in – and a useful outcome for your materials!
Enhance your lawn
In addition to mulching, as we mentioned above, harvested timber is great for building garden beds and flower planters! These are a natural way to create the raised garden bed you’ve always wanted or simply replace the border of your current flower bed to give it a bit of reinforcement!
When you choose to harvest timber, you’re making a natural investment in the environment, your property, and are even making a quick profit! You’re also allowing businesses like Green Ridge Forest Products to help you harvest your timber in a way that is beneficial to your property and promotes new regrowth all while giving you more space to enjoy with friends and family.
We proudly support the RAHC, a voluntary, industry-wide, domestic initiative that seeks to promote Real American Hardwood™ products.
