What is the Best Wood for Outdoor Projects?
Not all woods are created equal. That said, each type of wood has its own advantages and disadvantages. It is best to read all of the options and then make a decision based on your needs.
While no wood is completely immune from rotting or bug infestation, there are different attributes with each kind. Here are some of our favorites!
Cypress
Cypress wood is on our list since it is very durable and water resistant. Cypress wood can last up to 25 years for in-ground building and 40 or more years for above-ground projects.
Cypress is great for building and heavy construction. It can also be used for doors, siding, railroad ties, boats, bridges, and piers, as it is rot-resistant.
Cedar
While there are many different types of cedar, there are also many different reasons we recommend it for construction purposes!
Cedar is durable, even in damp climates. It can also repel insects naturally and even absorbs sound! Cedar also doesn’t shrink or warp when the weather changes, making it a great choice all around.
Douglas Fir
Douglas fir is another great choice as it is another very strong and durable wood. This strength allows it to withstand high impact and weight loads.
This also means it is better for withstanding harsh weather conditions. Douglas fir is one of the best woods for building a home for this reason!
Pine
Pine is another great wood, especially for those on a budget. Since pine is easily available, it is also more cost efficient than other woods. Pine is also light weight, making it easier to work with.
That said, though, pine is susceptible to scratches and can easily be damaged. Therefore, it is not our first choice when it comes to needing a wood that is durable.
Oak
Oak is one of the pricier woods, but for good reason. Oak is naturally beautiful and very durable, often used in construction projects. Oak can be used in essentially any building project, which makes it widely popular. Its flexibility to be used for virtually anything makes it worth the investment.
While we only highlighted 5 woods for outdoor projects, we know there are hundreds more options that may be beneficial for you or anyone else looking into exterior construction.
