  • The Most Suitable Wood for Your Interior Construction Projects

If you’re about to start a construction project, then you would need wood for both your exterior and interior construction. But merely knowing that isn’t going to solve any problem. You need to know what kind of wood would meet your specific requirements.

Wood is the resource that’s the bedrock of most interior construction projects. It’s easily available, budget-friendly, and you have an array of options to choose from. Some will protect you from the cold while others are exceptionally strong for their weight.

Before you begin looking at different types of wood, you need to understand whether you would be using it for soft or hard construction. Softwood is primarily used to construct window frames, furniture, and doors. Hardwood, as the name suggests, is used for floors, ceilings, and walls.

The typical softwoods are pine, cypress, hemlock, fir, and cedar. Hardwoods comprise chestnut, dogwood, oak, maple, elm, and ash.

    Softwood for interior construction projects

    Cypress

If you’re working on a patio project or any other outdoor furniture or deck construction, cypress is an excellent choice as it doesn’t rot when wet.

    Cedar

It’s lightweight yet tough making it ideal for wall coverings or closets. Its natural aroma repels insects and also has high resistance to decay.

    Fir

A quarter of all lumber in usage in North America is Douglas, one of the most common forms of fir. It’s widely used for everything from posts to house logs to plywood and even for fencing and firewood.

    Pine

Easily available and inexpensive, pine is widely used for woodworking projects and cabinets, other than house construction. It’s also commonly used for craft projects.

    Hemlock

Since it has knots, the Eastern hemlock isn’t preferred for construction projects. But some builders prefer it for the fact that one can use easily work on it with basic power tools.

    Hardwood for interior construction projects

    Chestnut

The fact that it splits quickly works against chestnut. But it’s suitable for roofing or flooring and it’s not difficult to work with.

    Ash

It doesn’t break or splinter easily, is extremely flexible, and can be curved into several shapes. All of which makes ash wood one of the more popular hardwoods.

    Hickory

Readily available, hickory is one of the most recommended woods for construction as it can be used for a variety of hardwood construction projects.

    Oak

It’s exceptionally reliable, and durable, making it the ideal choice for residential and commercial construction projects. Moreover, it’s also known for its ability to resist rot and damage from insects.

    Elm

From construction to flooring to veneer, elmwood is a popular choice for builders. It doesn’t split easily due to its interlocking grains. It’s also available in several textures and colors.

    Birch

Lightweight but durable, birch wood is easily available and recognizable. It’s mostly suited for flooring, cabinets, plywood, and furniture.

It helps to know what kind of wood is best suited for your interior construction needs before you make a buying decision. It will save you time, money, and a lot of needless hassle.
